Zitat Kimi Raikkonen says 2014 F1 plans wide open amid Red Bull link
By Jonathan Noble and Matt Beer Thursday, April 11th 2013, 07:22 GMT
Kimi Raikkonen says he is open-minded about his plans for the 2014 Formula 1 season, amid new speculation linking him to a Red Bull future. With renewed focus on Red Bull's driver line-up following Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber's team orders furore in Malaysia, Red Bull chief Dietrich Mateschitz was quoted in the German media as saying Raikkonen was "always a candidate" for a seat in his squad.
But Raikkonen said he was still far from entering into any talks over 2014 deals. "There are always a lot of rumours in F1, that is a normal thing," he said. "I don't have a contract for next year and I have no plans. "You guys make the rumours, so we will see what happens. The season is only two races old so I'll try to do this year well and we will see what happens."
Asked if he expected to still be in F1, Raikkonen replied: "I don't have a contract so I don't really have a plan, but of course I probably will be. But you never know. It is a funny place. So far, I have no contract."
Although Lotus has regularly stated its belief that it provides an ideal atmosphere for the free-spirited Finn, Raikkonen said he never really been uncomfortable in an F1 team. "Like I've always said all the teams have been different, and I have had a pretty good time in all the teams," he said. "They all have a different way of being run and I try to achieve the same result. I wouldn't say that this is much better than other places, because I never had any problems [elsewhere] or anything like that. It is just a different place."
ZitatRed Bull doesn't hide their interest in Räikkönen, who is without a contract
F1 | Turun Sanomat 10.4.2013 23:58
Before Easter a rumor spread in Eastern Europe telling that Kimi Räikkönen was planning to end his F1-career. Now at the eve of China GP Red Bull's management confirmed to the German media that Kimi is a candidate for Sebastian Vettel's new teammate.
Two weeks ago Räikkönen's current employer - the owner of Lotus racing team - Gerard Lopez expressed his interest to continue their adventure with Kimi after his current contract ends.
Then let's ask Räikkönen himself what his plans are: Have you thought about next year?
– No I haven't. I could even retire. I don't have any contract - or anything else - for next year. Let's just focus on this year's driving. The season has just only started, Räikkönen told TS.
Räikkönen enjoys excellently his freedom in Lotus. If the team can build a winning car in the future also, then Räikkönen will hardly have any bigger will to change teams.
On the other hand Red Bull is the current market force in F1 and Adrian Newey will also design the car for next year's turbo-time. They can compete financially with Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren, which Lotus again can't.
Relationships won't go back to normal
They are looking for a new driver alongside Vettel now that the German Maestro's relationship with Mark Webber got infected irrevocably after Malaysia GP.
Michael Schmidt from Auto, Motor und Sport -magazine followed Red Bull's explosive situation from very close and he predicted that the next time Webber won't shy away from the means if a similar duel for the victory takes place.
– The relationship between Vettel and Webber will never go back to what it used to be. Mark knows that Sebastian did it completely on purpose. Vettel did apologize, but in reality he only apologized to the audience. Deep down he knew that he snatched seven important points for himself.
– That's where the difference between a champion and a normal racing driver is. Champions only think about themself. Webber will learn from this, however one has to keep in mind that he didn't obey team orders in Silverstone 2011 either, Schmidt said.
I also asked Vettel's former trainer Tommi Pärmäkoski for his opinion about the happenings in Malaysia.
– First of all everyone should of course do as the team orders, but on the other hand I know Sebastian so well that I know his ruthless will to win. It goes ahead of everything else when he races. It's also the main reason why he has won so much and endured even the toughest pressure, Pärmäkoski ponders.
Felix da Costa too inexperienced
Only a top driver with nerves of steel who concentrates only on his own doings and doesn't startle easily can survive alongside Vettel. Räikkönen would be custom made for that recipe.
In China Red Bull's spare driver is their junior-team's biggest promise Antonio Felix da Costa from Portugal. The 21-years old youngster drives in World Series so he should be trained into Vettel's teammate with at least one year in Toro Rosso.
At the moment Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne are battling over who gets to continue in Toro Rosso in 2014. Neither one of them will hardly replace Webber.
When Ferrari terminated Räikkönen's contract Red Bull's driver-coordinator Helmut Marko contacted Kimi immediately on the paddock at the eve of Suzuka GP. It didn't however lead to anything more than co-operation in WRC since Webber has kept his seat - until now...
