I have been snooping around in the other forums and saw that Ferrari have been snapping up Macca personnel... I now believe Ferrari 2012 car will be a title contender! All Vettel and Kimi fans can be sure Alonso will be the WDC this year... mark my words!

Yep, but Ferrari lost their tyre expert to Mercedes, Marco Fainello , who has a nickname"poor mans Newey". Dunno how it will affect to their performance, not much if the guy hasnt been there for six months which is usually the time they have to be away from the sport?

But do we know exactly what losing a 'tyre expert' means to Ferrari? The same Ferrari that struggled massively to heat the prime compounds (especially when they were the 'hard' compound)..
One thing I've learned (in my little experience as an F1 fan) is that it seems to be more of an overall team effort to maximize the car performance. Once every so often there is a genius who comes along and stands out above the rest of the engineers (Rory Byrne, Adrian Newey..). But even Newey constantly states how it is the effort of everyone at Milton Keynes. Is Newey so successful because Horner has found a way to maximize the effort of everyone working in that factory? Has Horner somehow found a formula that Brawn enjoyed in the early 2000's at Ferrari? I think all of this talk is extra hype.
IMO, Ferrari need to be a little 'desperate' this year. They haven't claimed a WDC for 5 years now.. And with subtle changes in the technical regs for 2012, it doesn't appear that Ferrari has the potential to tweek their 2011 challenger for World Championship success. Let's see what Tombazis and Domenicalli are capable of coming up with..
Ferrari's problem is aerodynamics. they aren't that strong in that area, it's usually other teams who come up with some new solutions and designs. Monte constantly complains about that aerodynamics are too important now and that they aren't building planes but cars bla bla.. " title="roll" /> anyway it seems the realised they have to change something and with Fry and other new aerodynamics people they took from McLaren they will improve I guess. and the ban of ebd will help too. we'll see..

As for Ferrari , I think like miezicat, they havent done very well on aerodynamics for years and thats related to their tyre performance. Its interesting that Brawn took Ferrari guy immediately as if I recall correctly didnt Merc have problems with tyres, didnt they degrade too fast? Also Brawn may think Fainello has exellent connections to Pirelli.
I would say that Merc problem with tyres was that they were destroying tyres too fast. Maybe a guy from a team that was too gentle with tyres can bring a balance to Merc?

I could be talking pish here, but I think it's because they had a short wheelbase compared to the other cars. They had a short wheelbase last year, but it didn't matter much as the tyres where so durable.
McLaren had a similar problem back in 2008, Ferrari had the longer wheelbase making them faster in conditions that where 25+, while McLaren would struggle with their tyres a bit more in those conditions. However due to many wet and cold races it didn't matter much as the McLarens got their tyres up to heat easily and could keep them to that temperature. Luckily or McLaren that season we had te most wet races in a season, plus several cold races. That's why the Ferrari's in 07 and 08 where allergic to the wet compared to several others as they had the longest wheelbase.
