Very very good last laps from Kimi to fight for the las point! So Grosjean gets a penalty for the next race; I think it is now the time for the stewards to call in Perez for a meeting! His behaviour on the track seems like driving autoscooter! Even Button as his team mate is complaining about him. I can fully understand how angry Kimi was about him! Alonso and Kimi will never ever be his best friends.
I am perplexed by Martin Whitmarsh's comments which actually continue to support Perez despite his accident with Raikkonen yesterday " title="facepalm" /> .
How many WDC's and pundits comments about this wrecking ball on an F1 circuit will it take to realize this boy is a liability? To be fair to Perez, his actions were quite literally admonished by the stewards when they made Fernando give up the place after Perez's attempted pass. What more could Fernando do? He had to cut the chicane in order to avoid an accident. This allowance from the FIA was the impetus for Perez's repeated attempts to try to pass Raikkonen in the exact same spot. I personally think Perez was not investigated because of the FIA's stance on Fernando and Perez at the very same corner. It would be very difficult to penalize the same driver who was deemed to have 'been ahead' on a prior passing attempt. But this incident should have led to a Perez penalty. It's not correct to assume that the other driver will take evasive action to facilitate your passing attempt. That is not a proper F1 pass. That is wishful thinking and exactly the attitude which leads to a reckless attempt at a pass. And the prerequisite for an unnecessary coming together. I personally thought robbing points from a WDC contender coupled with an unnecessary coming together would have led to a penalty. But I understand the FIA would have looked like two-faced decision makers if they investigated the incident further.
The alonso pass, i hope we have a video. It looked like alonso had an option to keep his car on track, but he just chose to cut the corner.( perez was in control of the car that time ) And that attempt on kimi that failed, you can see kimi was trying to keep it on the race track but perez had absolutely no control and so kimi just cut the corner too
THen kimi drove defensively, whitmarsh had a thin line of defense, he used it. Thats it. He cannot really say my driver was shitty
I agree, JPP. I don't see how Whitmarsh thinks its fair one of his Pilots took points away from a WDC contender because of wreck less driving. This is not WWE where we pay for entertainment. This is the pinnacle of Motorsport and we pay to see who is their best at their craft..
I hate to draw this conclusion: but I feel like whitmarsh can get away with advising young checo to be 'fiery' because McLaren is not in the title hunt. There is no way his driving would be justified if vying for the title.
yeah, i agree too. i found the Perez move not bold but bullish.
as for gro, its not that i dont like him, its that i think he costs the team huge resources. i dont know how much his Total sponsor balances for that....
When Kimi Räikkönen was four points away from Sebastian Vettel before Monaco, the difference is now 21 points.
I walked around the paddock on Sunday night and asked those who I ran into how much this only one point hurt Räikkönen's WDC-battle.
The general opinion seemed to be that the season is still early, but of course he would need a quick victory to patch up for the that one setback.
Mika Salo and Jacques Villeneuve are nowadays tv-commentators, but whereas one is Kimi's buddy, the other one seems to like hitting him with critisism.
That's what happened in this interview at least when I asked how badly this hurt Räikkönen's WDC-battle.
Mika Salo, Maikkari:
– It wasn't exactly a catastrophy, but when you drive for the WDC then they are all important. Every point counts.
– Vettel hasn't yet made even one dive but he will face them. Statistically they have to come at some point and nobody gets away without having a weaker result.
– Alonso has had many setbacks, yet he is close to Kimi in points. This was a good victory for Ferrari after a difficult race.
– Alonso drove very wisely. When he saw that he wasn't fast enough, he didn't drive in front of anyone and let them past so he wouldn't make contact even in accident.
– From Kimi's POV 5th position would had been good. He wouldn't had needed anything else.
– The Merc can go well in Canada also, because there are no long and fast corners in which they have been weak. These short corners suit them. The tires can take it but I don't believe that this tire-thingy goes away without somehow affecting these schemes.
– It's totally insane if you let someone test with this year's car tires and then go and win the next race - it would had been a double victory if not for the SC, Salo thinks.
Jacques Villeneuve, Sky-tv, Italy:
– What happened to Kimi is not good for anyone's WDC-battle. Vettel took a great lead because of this.
– But Kimi was for some reason interviewed by the jugdes, and the reason why he was there was in no way comparable to what happened after the tunnel.
– The way Kimi drove is not acceptable in F1, Villenuve said.
– You are wrong, Salo said.
– But Kimi changed his position when braking and that's extremely dangerous. I don't want to say anything more, Villeneuve hit back.
Valtteri Bottas, Williams:
– To be honest I don't even know about the WDC-points and differences in the lead. But there are many races left. Nobody has won anything yet.
– I believe that Kimi will still fight for the title in the same way like Vettel and the others.
Michael Schmidt, Auto, Motor und Sport:
– This is just one race of 19 races. All top drivers will face at least one setback like this. Alonso already has three bad races from this season.
– Let's wait and see what the similar dive for Vettel will be. Only after that that will Kimi's setback get the right proportions.
– Vettel leads Räikkönen with 21 points, but this is still the early stage of the season with two thirds left.
Alex Wurz, Austria TV:
– There's no doubt that Kimi needs every single point he can get in the WDC-battle.
– Kimi should drive for victories, but sometimes it's not possible with Lotus. But when you get nothing or just one point in a battle where collecting points is crucial, this was a hard hit for Kimi.
– This isn't any mental hit for Kimi, but mathematically it will take time to get over it, Wurz reminded.
