ZitatWhen the Iceman met ice by Anthony Peacock / 28th January 2013 Today, the Lotus Formula One team launches Kimi Raikkonen’s 2013 challenger at its headquarters in the United Kingdom. But enough of that.
Three years ago tomorrow (January 29) the Iceman was contesting the Arctic Lapland Rally, his very first competitive outing in a Citroen C4 WRC.
His debut got off to a good start, as he was fifth fastest on the opening stage in his Red Bull-backed car. But on the second stage he slid off and hit a small tree in temperatures of about minus 20 degrees centigrade, which made the half-hour it took to extract his car even more excruciating.
Although all hope of a good result was gone, he concentrated just on learning the car for the rest of the event, posting solid stages times that were under a second per kilometre slower than those of his experienced team mate Dani Sordo, who went on to win.
“It was really positive,†said Kimi at the time. “We achieved everything that we wanted to out of the weekend. I’ve got a bit more knowledge of the car now and more of a feeling all the time as to how to drive it in the best way.â€
Just a few rallies later, he ended up fifth again – but this time in the WRC, in Turkey.
Now though, it’s back to Formula One. He was stunning on his return season, but he has no idea what to expect from the car that is being launched today, as he told Hollywood star Matt Le Blanc, in no uncertain terms: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xnlLshm9Bw
